During the chaos of last years NAMM and the birth of more iPad, iPhone musical devices than ever before, only the Numark iDJ Pro made me sit up and pay attention. It’s not the first of its kind, and there have previously been well… unsuccessful attempts at an iPad based DJ controller, with none being able to give professional features or controls. So it seems Numark were the first manufacturer to have a proper attempt and simply by looking at the images you can see that it’s not a novelty and was designed with proper gigs in mind. I’ll be looking at whether it’s as good in practice as it is in appearance.

If you’ve used any of Numark’s recent DJ Controllers there’ll be no great surprises in terms of the layout. It’s got two touch-sensitive platters that are used for cueing, scratching effects but also loop in and out, ½ and 2x loop length; pitch fader and bend controls. You’re not exactly spoiled for features but it is enough to do a successful set in a respectable club, and iPad or not, for unit of this price range that is to be expected.

The introduction of the iPad however does give unfamiliarity to the middle of the unit. The iPad provides the music library and all-round control of the unit. One positive that comes with integrating an iPad is the benefit of a well designed and produced app, in this case the Algoriddim djay app. They were both designed to partner each other so this is the recommended purchase but it is compatible with other DJ apps so you can experiment around. Sound quality is very sophisticated if we consider the small size. We have listened music, podcasts and a few audio books for voice clarity; watched a HD video. Having 2 x 2 Watts per channel power output, Logic3 i-Station Podium will not surely replace your aging surround home sound system but it achieves what it promises very well. Producing decent sound and being a home for iPad 2 in your room or kitchen.

The dock is stable and securely holds the iPad even though it is made from plastic. It will rotate to provide both portrait and landscape modes for the tablet. Footrest is adjustable for multiple viewing angles.

You can download free app from the Apple market and get more features such as alarm clock with modes, calendar, equalizer, photo album, music player, Internet radio dock etc. The accessory is compatible to iPad and iPad 2.

It is possible to connect other audio resources using the standard stereo line-in slot.

We would appreciate more if it had the recharging of the tablet as well. The price tag is another downside. If you really need a dock anyway (for example; in kitchen for recipes while listening to music), it can be an option.

In our previous post, we had reviewed Apple iPad 2 dock. Now, we will talk about a much cheaper alternative. It is sold online by MiniInTheBox.com for a super low price of $4.99

This charging dock for iPad 2 also syncs up with the tablet. Very similar to original dock design by Apple. It functions the same way. You get a stand for your tablet to watch movies or type on the virtual keyboard easily. While doing this, iPad2 is charged. There is a safe charging integrated circuit to protect against overcharging. It weighs about 100 grams. So, be careful when your iPad sits on it.

There is 3.5 mm line out for audio listening.

So, why do you think that the price is such low if it basically does the same thing. Well! It has no Apple brand on it and you can not know what will happen after let’s say 6 months of usage. Such cheap accessories are always open to malfunctioning. But, anyway you are paying only a few bucks and you will not be so sorry if it happens.

I am quite disappointed the fact the functionality of the Apple iPad 2 dock. It is not about the design. The white accessory is stylish, unexpectedly heavy and looking secure, but the real point is the lack of functions. Why would you pay around $27 just for a charging stand? It has no cables and we get only audio out. It is portrait only. And, you can not put iPad 2 on the docking station with smart cover or most probably with most cases on it. This is a big downside in my opinion.

There are many alternatives from 3rd parties now to provide a better experience as a base station for iPad 2. For example, iLuv ipad2 dock or iSound are just two of them. Both of them provide built-in speakers. If your sole reason is to use it for typing with a bluetooth keyboard, ZaggMate keyboard case or ZaggFolio would be better choices. Because they feature an integrated keyboard, case and multiple angle stands.

There are positives surely. The build quality is impressive. If you have owned a Time Capsule, you will understand me. The white plastic is very sticky and sturdy. Do not worry. Your iPad 2 will not fall even though this gadget looks very weak to support it. It is not.

So,  my rating would be 6/10.
